Calling Yourself Liberal and Religious won’t MAKE You a Good Person

PartyPlayFairDemo

Today we have two re-writes of older articles that seem very relevant today:

First, we will take the “Liberals” as well as the “Conservatives” to task for partisan hypocrisy…

Nowadays the word Liberal is often used as a pejorative; I often use it that way myself for good reasons.

Yet I am a moderate, and probably spend about 40% of the time cursing the idiocy of the Left, and 60% of it complaining and worrying about the Right (It is too bad there are not more real conservative minds in the Conservative camp these days.). Of the two the Conservatives tend to scare me a bit more but the Leftists in total power would be/ have been worse. But the actions of the radicals on either side do not condemn entire schools of thought to a mature mind.  This should be remembered by pundits on both sides in this age of attack politics.

Lately a radically Conservative group has taken over almost all the political voice of conservative American Christianity.  They have used their pulpit to propound, and pound in, their own view of history, and how Christianity has influenced the development of the United States as a nation.

They are not actually lying about the influence of the churches. The problem is that they have forgotten from just where in the Church all that influence came.  Yes, it was those damn liberals every time!

In American history, every time the religious culture has had a profound positive influence (as judged by successive generations) on changes in society those influences have their roots in the Liberal-to-Radical churches. They most certainly did not come from the Conservative ones!

The Conservative Churches in every case have held the line with the status quo through history whether it was regarding the Revolution, slavery, child labor, workers rights, racial equality or now, gay rights.  Yet the Conservative Churches of today want to shine their halos with the contributions made for the most part by the Liberal Churches of the past.

This activity is not unique to Christianity by any means.  A Radical Conservative Jew will spend much energy telling you about Judaism’s amazing contributions to Western society, but will refuse to see that his brand of thinking never produced any of it.  Find a Conservative Imam, and you will find a man eager to convince you that Islam has been an enormously positive contributor to civilization over the centuries.  But if you remind him that blind faithfulness to Islam’s Conservative philosophy had nothing to do with the various periods of (heretically liberal) Islamic glory that he is polishing up for you to admire; he may even take offense.

In every case where religious and political power intermingle the things that modern world civilization would call progress has only come when the dominant Church(s) is(are) liberal to the point of being heretical (to the parent dogmas and doctrines), tolerant and more focused on understanding, accepting and spreading the “love behind the Law” rather than promoting a zero-tolerance attitude regarding adherence to the “Letter of the Law.”

But only stagnation and decay ensue when the Churches are conservative and cling to a memory, or fictitious ideal, of “the way it should be.”

It should be noted that Conservative religious thought can have a greatly positive influence on society but, that usually the effects remain chiefly negative.

Witness: the defense of slavery, and the stances of “Godly” preachers and priests against child labor laws, and minority civil rights laws.

Witness: the attempts at forced, coerced and violent conversions directed at any people of another religion that are under the influence of a politicized religion (theocracies, inquisitions, shari’a states).

We all admit that Conservatism is designed to be highly successful at keeping the wheels of a society turning. Who but a fool will deny that there is a true virtue most times in maintaining most of the status quo; Leftists take note of the qualifications and keep your straw men to yourselves – I am not Christian, and never have been a Republican, or supporter of either Bush.

But, it also must be admitted that Conservative governments and organizations have a poor track record when attempting to grease those wheels, to make accommodation for the fact that seems “odd“, “weird“, “different” to the average mind; whether the ideas are good ones or not!

When the going gets rough or to be a creative inspiration for the people who bear the main burdens of pushing the cart of civilization further, faster and safer than our ancestors ever believed it could go Conservatives can be of more a drag chain when they should be acting like the regenerative brakes that go with a hybrid engine.

Conservative ideology certainly does not allow real flaws in the basic social system to be changed without a protracted, and often ugly, fight with the liberal mindset who are busy finding things that are not really broken to make into really nasty situations with well-meaning new laws and more, and more, and more tension from enforcement, and less and less elbow room for the well-intentioned citizen just trying to get along and improve their lives.

Without a Liberal element in society, one that has enough influence to smack the current bosses on the head now and then but, not enough to dominate society  a person lives in what is at best a well upholstered slave camp destined to fade into the dust of history.

And…

Without a Conservative element at the core to give perspective and balance a people will… well, just look at the aftermath of every single revolution in the past – the American revolution was actually a colony revolt – it was an independently evolving, functioning society that broke away from the parent nation/culture rather than an indigenous movement to topple all the central power structures and replace them ad hoc with unproven or dis-proven but, “much better” institutions; not long after they succeed the real bloodshed is just beginning!

Who was it again that decreed with proven ‘Holy Authority‘ that all human problems can, and may, only be solved by a totally Left-wing or totally Right-wing ideology? When did admitting that your Party’s platform cannot solve all problems if followed by “good” people?

The voting public needs to take off their trendy, strait-jackets/sheep-outfits, grow up, and look at reality – of the real kind, rather than the oh-so-importantly-unimportant political sort – and then find the ideal solutions, not the solutions that serve your political tribe while walking over everyone else’s Lives’, Liberties, and frantic Pursuits of Happiness.

Reform in the Muslim World… What Would It Look Like?

muslimahs live in silence and fear

Just daydreaming…

A Muslim boy whose parents fear his increasing radicalization and association with fundamentalist Imams is surprised when his father allows him to join an online Islamist Gaming Site called Teen Muttawa.

The boy logs on, and soon finds himself with two or three friends who show him the duties he must perform as a good Muslim, without questioning, despite his misgivings; Islam is submission, he is told, not interpretation; the Human conscience is not to be trusted in the face of the Word of Allah, as represented by the Shari’ah.

After a time he is allowed to join in a “game” that shows information about Muslims who have become apostate in the eyes of the group. The members vote after each revelation at to what the group should do, pursue, or relent, show mercy or show none, punish or kill. Random high ranking members are assigned to carry out and record the verdicts. The virtual world being embraced by Shari’a excites the boy.

After three days of almost solid “gaming” the boy finds himself viewing a girl in proper niqab walking in a part of town no girl the boy knew would go to.

He votes to pursue… recalling inunctions from his mentors that even his sister can sin and bring dishonor if she strays or is tempted from Islam.  The majority agrees.

The next shot shows the girl from a distance, obviously not escorted, in a secluded place. The boy is so offended by her behavior, he contrasts it to his sisters unfailing modesty and purity. This makes him want to punish the girl for the dishonor she is putting on HER family; who must be already shamed of her; how could such a person not show signs of their rebellion?

He votes to pursue. The majority agrees.

Now he sees the girl talking to a man labeled as haraam to her; then a shot of her embracing him, and another of the man leaving the scene. The boy recalls how his own sister had not even spoken of a boy once their father had declared against him.

The boy votes to arrest. The majority of “Muttawa” agree.

Information is brought in that the girl met her school friend whom she had fallen in love with. Her family had forbidden a marriage and he was moving to another city; she had met him to say goodbye though not even a kiss would she allow herself of him.

The boy votes to execute; the families honor is stained regardless if adultery occurred.  The majority agree.

Later that morning, as he finishes his prayers and prepares to finally sleep he gets an email with the results of the “verdict“. This is an exciting moment, when he can see the reality of his participation in the holy system of Allah’s punishment and reward for those who submit and those who pretend they may not.

He opens the email, loads the attached jpg; it is his sister… whom he realizes a moment too late is standing behind him with a baseball bat, and three similarly armed, and condemned, friends.

(optional Hitchcock style TV apologia can have parents intervening after boy is “scared straight.”)

Do Not Adjust Your Map; Canada Has Entered… The Shari’a Zone

I can remember when Canada was the more or less sane of the two English speaking North American nations; times they are a changin’ have changed!

I took a look at Jihad Watch prior to moving on to other, more domestic, affairs when this little number from the Calgary Herald popped up at the top; I envy Robert his “Spencidor’s Army” sending him items they glean from the net… it takes TIME to read all those news sources!

So much for domestic affairs for a while…

CALGARY – The Calgary mother who killed her teenage daughter by strangling her with a scarf more than three years ago will not have to spend a day in jail, a judge ruled on Thursday.

But, in suspending the sentence of Aset Magomadova and placing her on probation for three years, Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Sal LoVecchio said the penalty can still meet the ends of justice.

Yes, Virginia you read that right… three years probation for 2nd degree murder; it gets “better”! Let us take this nauseating mess one glob at a time; the additions in brackets are mine.

“At first blush (a suspended sentence) may sound like a get out of jail free card. It is not,” emphasized the judge.

“The court has said the act in question [murdering her daughter with her own hands] does not merit [two goats would not butt heads over this girl] a period of incarceration. [“not subject to retaliation” is “a father or mother (or their fathers or mothers) for killing their offspring, or offspring’s offspring.” (‘Umdat al-Salik o1.1-2)]

There are other, even more reliable texts that support this woman’s actions according to Shari’a law…

“The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) used not to kill the children, so thou shouldst not kill them unless you could know what Khadir had known about the child he killed, or you could distinguish between a child who would grow up to be a believer (and a child who would grow up to be a non-believer), so that you killed the (prospective) non-believer and left the (prospective) believer aside.”
– Sahih Muslim Book 019, Number 4457.

On with the show…

What the court has done is reserved or to use the word of the statute, ‘suspended’ judgment on that point [the murder of her daughter] for a period of time on conditions. If the conditions are satisfied, then the individual will not be sentenced. If they are breached, the individual will be brought back to the court to be dealt with further.”

What this seems to mean is that if the lady is nice, and keeps to her probation then in three years it will be as though the murder never happened! At that time I assume the judge will go to the cemetery and wave his magic wand; the dirt will rise and the daughter will walk amongst us again, go to school, graduate, marry and live a long happy life. What is that Virginia? The corpse will just rot in the ground and a life will never be lived? Ce La Vie!

…LoVecchio deemed she did not intend to kill her, even though such an act required at least 2 1/2 minutes of continuous strangulation to cause death, and convicted her last October of the lesser included offence of manslaughter.

Manslaughter; oopsie, I just accidently, but with culpability, strangled my own freaking daughter for enough time to listen to Break On Through (To The Other Side) by The Doors and have a whole 5 seconds left to watch her eyes go dead in silence! Try it; play the track and close your eyes and just imagine the evil n this judge’s heart…

Gee Virginia, can you tell that I am a little tweaked by this judge? Knew you could!

…it was the wish of the family that “people would know mental health services for young people and hel[p] for their families will be improved, and changes made to the system, so that others who have to go through similar situations do not fall through the cracks.”

What more do you need to understand the 180 degree twist this family puts on blame, shame and trauma? Allah forbid anyone else should have to go through the horror of murdering their daughter… who mentions the daughter? No one!

Defence lawyer Alain Hepner said his client was crying after she learned she’d be free to go home and agreed it was appropriate.

…LoVecchio said he wrestled with dynamics of the family in reaching his conclusions.

“This was a family in crisis with events spiraling out of control,” he said, alluding to the friction between Aset and Aminat leading up to the deadly confrontation that morning.

MURDER, damn it, it was a murder, not a confrontation!

“It cannot be reduced to simply a case of mom choosing to kill her daughter as a form of discipline because she misbehaved. Quite simply, the events of that morning cannot be seen as a single isolated event.”

Yes, it can as I am sure that is exactly what was going through the “mom’s” mind at the time her version of Break On Through was playing in her head; and for 5 seconds longer.

Quite simply the above garbage cannot be seen as anything but trying to blame the victim or someone, anyone but the mother who strangled her daughter for AT LEAST 2 and a half minutes until she was dead, dead, dead.

But the Crown Prosecutor is not taking this lying down!

Crown prosecutor Mac Vomberg had argued for a 12-year prison term.

The Crown appealed the conviction long ago, but Vomberg said he could not comment about a possible appeal of the sentence.

“That’s up to another branch of Alberta Justice,” Vomberg said outside court, emphasizing there are “only degrees of losers, no winners” in the tragic case.

“We have to review this decision very carefully and we have to analyze exactly what are the terms of probation.”

I take that last to mean that if this Reader’s Digest Mom steps over the line even a fraction Mr. Vomberg will be there with a video camera and handcuffs.

Defence lawyer Alain Hepner said his client was crying and very relieved about not having to go to jail.

I am sure; she was probably shocked to her bones when they told her that Canada actually would send her to prison for this; and they would have, if she had not been a Muslim with “traditional ways” confusing her willing integration into Western society – and a daughter too willing to add to her confusion by adopting those ways too quickly! POOR WOMAN!

The Worm is Surely Beginning to Turn On The Islamists in the West: Credit Where Credit is Due

Today the Huffington Post, a blog more known for its Leftward bias than its claimed moderate stand actually made good on its claims today. There is an article linked from Marie Claire that is unashamedly about honor killing in the West.  Not one line or even a word of Islamist apologetics!

"An American Honor Killing

In a quiet suburban parking lot outside of Phoenix, a father floors the gas on his Jeep Grand Cherokee and heads straight for his 20-year-old daughter. His goal: to protect his family’s "honor." Yes, honor crimes have washed up on our shores.

The deadly face of Muslim extremism

Tarek Fatah and Farzana Hassan, National Post
Published: Wednesday, December 12, 2007

The tragic death of a Mississauga, Ont., teenage girl — allegedly at the hands of her own traditionally minded Muslim father — has sent shock waves across the world. Canadians are justified in raising concerns as to whether this is a sign of the rise of Islamic fundamentalism in their own backyard.

Aqsa Parvez, a sprightly 16-year-old, beloved of her friends and peers at Applewood Heights Secondary School, was only trying to be herself, was only wishing for a normal adolescence amid Canada’s rich cultural mosaic. Her father has now been charged with murder, and his son with obstruction, while a young life has been snuffed out — likely in the name of honour and Islam.

Radical Muslim men consider themselves ultimately responsible for the conduct of the womenfolk. This outlook is rooted in a medieval ethos that treats women as nonpersons, unable to decide for themselves what they should wear, where they must go and what they must accomplish in life. If their conduct is seen as contravening this austere religious outlook, they are invariably subjected to abuse.

The hijab in particular has become a thorny issue among Muslim families. It has been elevated as a sort of “sixth pillar of Islam” among militant sects. Young teenage girls are often lectured over the virtues of the hijab by their family members. Once they hit puberty, compliance is deemed a non-negotiable religious requirement.

Yet none of this is actually mandated by the Koran. The Koran, while speaking generally of modesty in dress and demeanour, falls short of specifying the details of that modesty. Scripture also makes allowances for non-compliance of religious edicts if the environment is not conducive to their observance.

The Koran exhorts compassion upon parents, caretakers and guardians of young girls. Yet some families instead exhibit a strict conformity to doctrine and dogma, which in turn leads to violence, bigotry and intolerance of alternative understandings of faith.

There is much discussion in Canadian society about the religious freedoms of those who choose to wear the hijab. We hear relatively little about the oppression of young girls who make the opposite choice. Seldom is their oppression from within their own community, or even their own family, cast as a human rights issue.

Consider, as an example, the Montreal mosque that recently posted on its Web site a warning to the effect that if young girls took off their hijab, they could end up getting raped and having “illegitimate children.” Other proffered risks included “Stresses, insecurity and suspicion in the minds of husbands” and “instigating young people to deviate towards the path of lust.”

As if the threat of rape and the fear of illegitimate children were not enough, these pre-teen girls were told that if they took off their hijab, they would cease to be Muslims:By removing your hijab, you have destroyed your faith. Islam means submission to Allah in all our actions.” Little wonder then, that Canadian girls walk away from sports tournaments rather than remove their hijabs.

Muslims need to stand up to this sort of emotional and religious blackmail by imams who spread the competing agendas of Saudi Arabia and Iran into Canada. Young Aqsa Pervez’s death cannot be reversed. But in her memory, we can at least challenge those whose message leads to rage and madness.

The Real Message of the Bridges TV Tragedy is that even this guy can’t really “get it” though he tries

(HH: Full disclosure; the author of this piece is rumoured to have his own issues with violence and women but I cannot confirm or deny that. The piece itself is very interesting as much for the mostly good analysis as for the appalling blind spots it shows to an Western reader.)

by Mauri’ Saalakhan
It is written that the preferred act of Iblis (the enemy of ALLAH, The Almighty, and all humanity) is the breakup of families, and causing separation between people in general.

The family, the nucleus of society, could be described as the most important institution in human civilization. The strength of a nation is determined in large part by the collective health and well being of the sum total of its families. It therefore makes sense that this would be a priority target for the Shayateen (Satan and his hordes).

(HH: It should be noted that to a Muslim a “family” means a MAN and his children and whatever woman or women he is married to at the moment. This is not a controversial statement at all. I merely relate established precedent in sharia law.)

The institution of family has been under siege around the world throughout most of human history. It serves in the modern world as a barometer of the troubling dichotomy that exists between material progress and social advancement. Racism, classism, sexism, materialism, and the often deadly and life changing social malady known as “spousal abuse,” are all manifestations of this troubling cross-cultural, world wide dichotomy!

Here in America, a week doesn’t go by without numerous reports in the mainstream media of horrific attacks committed by former lovers on former lovers. The victims (more often than not, young women of varying socio-economic and cultural hues) sustain serious injury or death at the hands of men who, for a variety of reasons, do not know how to love, or when to let go.

While the vast majority of these cases involve non-Muslims (Christians, Jews and others), rarely, if ever, do the religious beliefs of the assailant make the news. But in Post 9/11 America, whenever a Muslim is involved, religion will often become a front page issue!

A Time Bomb waiting to go off

It has now become clear, to this writer at least, that those who knew 44 year old Muzzammil “Mo” Hassan well could not have been truly shocked when he allegedly took the life of his third wife, Aasiya Zubair Hassan, 37. While they may be surprised by the way this bright young architect from Karachi lost her life, the profile which has emerged suggests that anyone who really knew “Mo” Hassan had to know that he was capable of committing murder.

The man who became variously known as Muzzammil Hassan, “Steve Hassan,” “Mo Hassan” and “Mo Steven Hassan,” was reportedly born on Nov. 6, 1964, and came to America from South Asia in 1979. He reportedly established roots in Rochester (NY), and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester in 1985. In 1996, Hassan graduated from the Simon Graduate School of Business at the University of Rochester with an MBA. Despite these achievements, however, “Mo” had problems.

Hassan reportedly had two previous marriages; both unsuccessful, and both riddled with detailed allegations of violent abuse. His first marriage was to a Caucasion convert named Janice, with whom he bore two children (a son and daughter); the second was to a Pakistani woman named Sadia. Neither marriage lasted long.

(It’s been reported that Sadia’s family recently sacrificed two lambs in gratitude that she was able to escape her marriage alive, after about a year of unhappy matrimony.)

After Hassan’s marriage to his third wife, Aasiya, with whom he also had two children, they settled in Orchard Park, on the outskirts of Buffalo, New York – a predominately white, middle class community of about 30,000 residents.

On February 6, 2009, after years of documented abuse, Aasiya Hassan filed for divorce from Muzzammil Hassan. Six days later, Hassan reportedly walked into the Orchard Park police station to report that they could find the body of his 37 year old wife at the offices of Bridges TV, also located in Orchard Park. Hassan has since been charged with second-degree murder, and is currently being held without bail.

According to people who saw her in repose, Aasiya was buried with the unmistakable marks of raw brutality – i.e., gashes on her face and body, and with her head delicately repositioned over her body, because of the brutal way she had been murdered and decapitated at the company that she helped found with her estranged husband.

As details emerge regarding the troubled life she led with “Mo” Hassan, Aasiya Zubair Hassan has become a tool of convenience for some of the most vehement critics of Islam in America, and a lightning rod of recrimination within the Muslim community itself.

The failure of a community

In her report on the tragedy, Asra Nomani quotes Afshan Qureshi, the president of Saathi, an advocacy group in Rochester for domestic-violence victims, and a leader in the local Muslim community who helped Hassan’s second wife. “Our community failed. We punished the victims. People said the first marriage failed because the girl was American, the second marriage failed because the girl wasn’t patient enough and then, look, the third wife is happy. Everything is OK. The community is an accomplice in the story of Muzzammil Hassan.” Indeed it is…in more ways then one.

The tragedy was aided and abetted by clumsy attempts at secrecy; the type of secrecy routinely practiced by many communities around such serious societal issues as domestic violence and mental illness. However, both Muslims and non-Muslims were reportedly aware of the allegations of abuse in Hassan‘s third marriage. It is also known that the accused assailant was prescribed psychiatric medications for mood swings, and may have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Salahuddin Malik – a former State University of New York history professor, and currently chairman of the council of trustees at the Islamic Center of Rochester – reportedly believed in Hassan’s [Bridges TV] vision, and didn’t think a history of domestic violence should preclude him from realizing that vision. He reportedly stated, “You don’t want to get involved in personal matters.”

(HH: This is one of those appalling blind spots I spoke of. This bozo knew the man was a nutter but because it was something a Muslim considers “private” he jumped on board and helped this guy become a role model.)

Another Buffalo area Muslim leader reportedly told the Buffalo News (incredulously), “I think of Aasiya as a martyr.” Later adding, “If only Aasiya would have made some noise.” The problem with this line of thinking is that, while Aasiya repeatedly failed to follow through with formal charges against her abusive husband, she did make some noise…but to no avail.

(HH: 700 club types aside I think we can all agree that while the Muslim community immediately around him was primarily responsible the non-Muslim apathy toward crimes in “ethnic” contributed as well.)

Malik’s wife, Sarwat Malik, a physician who was also familiar with Muzzammil Hassan’s history of domestic violence, correctly opined that this dynamic [community silence and inaction] comes with a high socio-psychological cost:

“Everyone is suffering in silos. This should change. Women are battered in all cultures, and the common factor is the social sanction of violence against women.
(HH here: Umm no lady, YOUR community was criminally silent. our communities abhor such things which is why Western husbands who kill their wives usually try to hide the fact or go on to kill themselves. They do not brag about it or glory in it like Muslims and some others do.) As a community, we must bear a collective responsibility of keeping everyone safe. It cannot be done by a few organizations. It must be done by all, working together. We need to make it a whole community affair. Everyone must speak out that violence will not be tolerated.”
(HH again: Well you THINK lady? Welcome to something called reality!!!)

Dr. Malik’s observation reveals one of the core lessons connected to the Bridges tragedy. A genuine community must behave like a community…everyone bears a “collective responsibility” for keeping everyone else safe.

There are a number of other closely related lessons which also emanate from this terrible tragedy. In Part Two, insha’Allah, we will examine some of these ‘secondary issues of import.’
