How to Reform Politics: What Your Politician Will Never Tell You

Guy DeWhitney's Heretics Crusade: Defendng Western Civilization

You hear it on the Left, you hear it on the Right, you hear it from the Third Parties – Reform Campaign Finance; Reform Congressional Lobbying, Reform Labor Relations and Unions! But, you never hear solutions, at least not solutions that amount to more than “things would be wonderful if those people over there (labor, management, government, you and me, etc. ad nauseum) were not allowed to participate in the process at all!!!“.

And the sad part Virginia, is that the solutions are so damn simple anyone can see it the moment they drop their “but, we have to win”/zero sum perspectives.

How do we reform campaign finance? We can’t, so we don’t.

That is, we don’t reform it, we eliminate it! It is nothing but a source of potential corruption and cannot be “fixed” by any means available to man, so let’s drop it. All election campaigns should be financed from a pool of government funds; if politician A gets X number of signatures qualifying for a place on the ballot for the office of Y he/she would get the same exact amount as every other andidate who qualified for that ballot.

I eagerly await anyone who can show me that this is a bad idea, except for the fact that their side, the good guys, can’t use it against the evil bad guys, their opposition, whoever they may be at the moment.

That takes care of a huge part of the inefficiency and corruption of modern politics at one fell swoop; how about we go after most of the rest with our backhand?

Congressional lobbying, bending the ear of Senators and Representatives, is quite arguably inseparable from a meaningful freedom of speech or a responsive government, so how do we reform what we cannot eliminate? We pass a law making it illegal to pay (in goods or services as well as money) someone to do it for you, that’s all.

Both of these ideas put central the concept that money is not equal to speech;a nonsensical conclusion to anyone who is not desiring to benefit from corruption before it is shut down if I ever eard one!

Think about it Virginia, if Citizen A has 10 dollars his political voice is only ten dollars “loud” but, if Citizen Y, or worse, Corporation M and foreign national R, with ten million dollars have voices that make Citizen A virtually invisible on the political stage; surely this is not what any of our founders
envisioned!

Which brings us to the unions! SO much has changed since the heyday of the teens and twenties of the last century. Remind me again, in this day and age just what purpose do Union Leaders serve… other than their own?

My proposal once again is very simple, organic and even elegant: when a union ends a despite and signs a new contract they immediately disband.

That’s it. If a new issue arises and the workers vote to form a new union to deal with it all is well and good. And when a new contract is signed the leaders go back to work instead of sinking their fangs into the real worker’s necks and riding them until they die, or their industry is killed instead.

Now, take those three, simple changes, all of them unassailable on Constitutional grounds, and project the country past two presidential election cycles; does your mind boggle at the possibilities for real improvement? Does a shiver run down your leg?

Then take it and run with it! The beauty of our system is that no matter how much a pol does not want to do something, if enough people get an idea in their heads the pols have to go along and pray to survive the next election.

All of these changes have one thing in common, reality, they make the government deal with facts and voters, not special interests and corporate funds; and that Virginia, is really all this country needs to be a strong and beautiful as it can be.

The American Population Have Willfully Become Immoral Idiots

corporateAmerica

I for one am getting rather tired of all the whining and moaning from all sides over the evils that have been inflicted upon us by the “forces of darkness“, also known as: Republicans, Democrats, Independents,Corporations, Racial Groups, Religious Groups, Foreign Groups; any group that is for whatever that particular whiner is against.

What really matters to most voters is not what they are accomplishing; it is all about preventing the opposition from carrying out their-heinous-agenda-destined-to-enslave-the-Human-race-forever-and-ever.  They define themselves not by what they are “for”, instead they define their existence, their life, on what they are against. Is it any wonder that politics is a morass of factionalism and lends very little of its time and energy to actually serving the public with genuine weal?

And these same voters all can see before them the one and only insurmountable barrier to political reform and campaign reform, indeed a complete “America reform“! They see it, they condemn it, they tell everyone that it must be “reformed”; and every man(woman)-jack of them plays, and protects, the very system they demonize; it is called campaign finance Virginia, and it must GO!

Why do politicians listen to anyone other than citizen voters? Why is voting seen as a valueless “right” by the majority of US citizens when they should regard it as a priceless privilege and duty? The answer to both is the same: we allow people to give politicians money.  Individuals, groups, companies, corporations vast and amorphous, all are allowed to BRIBE POLITICIANS; this is subject to almost laughable “rules” intended for [pretending we give a damn about] “protecting” the citizenry from “abuses” of this essentially irredeemable and malignant institution, all the while scheming for “our side” to game the system.

Take a moment people, think about it and admit your guilt! Americans like to think they might be able to buy their way to control in the name of their own personal “way to Utopia” regardless of the merit of any particular idea put forth by the “opposition”. But, imagine what things would be like if there were no campaign donations period, end of sentence. No. Campaign. Donations.

The basic idea is also simple. Just make ALL elected politicians campaign with money provided by an evenly divided taxpayer provided pool. Once a candidate is on the ballot they would be equal in the eyes of those in the electorate not already familiar with their record; if the same professionally neutral production companies were used and the same budgets given to each, why the best man(woman) just might have a chance of winning!

But, the American electorate knows this and does nothing. They, yes, I mean you, chase after your own slice of the corruption while not lifting a finger to take action, or even speak about just doing away with the whole toxic institution as easily as Herr Obama nationalized whole swaths of privately owned business; but, this time it would be not a theft, but a returning of sovereignty to where it belongs, in the hands of We The People!

Let us go further and declare a campaign able to buy products and impersonal services (printing flyers & buttons, ads, catering, security, etc.) but, prevent them from HIRING anyone for anything more creative than emptying the trashcans at the office! Yes, Virginia, let us prevent anyone from being a professional politician elector! No hired writers, artists, designers, agitators, petition collectors or “political advisors”; in the case of things like television production all candidates in a particular election should be confined to using the same production company which will be selected by competitive bid.

The idea behind this addition is that if you have to hire people to get your message across your message is probably not that important to anyone but you. If something needs to happen it will generate the zeal in citizens to do something about it without anyone making a living from it and automatically biasing the process!

Think about it my people, other than as a defense of your dreams of a forlorn hope that your personal brand of righteousness might “win” using corrupt and dirty methods, then shed them like butterfly leaving behind its worminess to produce a thing of beauty, what cause do you have to not rise up and demand campaign financing to END?

It is inimically self-righteous selfishness that has resulted in our giving money the rights of a citizen. Money represents nothing more than the collective productivity of a nation. Money is nothing but a system of tokens that we use to keep track of productivity as we trade it amongst ourselves and other nations.

Taken it objectively: this perversion of Western politics means that whoever can amass (by hook or by crook, only the end total matters) a large portion of this collection of game counters has the right to more “free speech” than those citizens, equal in numbers and passion, who are not as good at the economical game.  Doesn’t this concept go violently against both Conservative and Liberal ideals?!? Why does it continue then, when real power (the Vote) still is in the hands of the citizens?

Because too many people think THEY MIGHT BE ABLE TO USE IT THEMSELVES, and so excuse it!  So Americans should stop whining about not having influence America, we are getting exactly what we wanted and what we deserve.

Political Parties Exist to Subvert Instead of Enable the Voice of the Individual.

My Life for Ze Party und Ze Leader!

Why is it again that, in 2010, political parties still exist? Well, other than for the implimentation of the control of a few who claim the voice of many, I don’t see much reason; member voices are given more lip service than respect from the party’s “leaders”. And, while we are attacking preconception, why a party “leader”? Would not an “impementor” be a more appropriate term for the desired function of the office.? Someome trusted to make the will of the members of the party heard effectively?

But how is that again? A party is supposed to make the voice of its X number of citizens louder than this other bunch’s equal number of voices?

Do you people out there ever completey agree with every part of “your” party’s platform? If one election cycle you do happen to agree with it all have you ever in your life seen the party hold to each and every plank after the election?
Remind me again Virginia; just WHO these parties claim to serve?

A Modestly Heretical Proposal

Get rid of the parties. No labels to hide behind, no pols in pocket of biz or party, pols un-electable without personal support from the community, pol has to listen on every issue and best of all, the most important, the pol would be judged more by accomplishments and record than by their associations.

Today there is no practical reason not to elect individual candidates directly.

Not sure you like the idea? Think about this: neither. Obama nor Palin would have ever been nominated without an agenda following party forcing them upon their supporters. Think about that for a while…

Damn the People, Full Speed Ahead!

What GOOD do political parties, Left or Right do today? For that matter what good have they EVER done? All parties from the beginning of politics seem to have existed for the sole purpose of taking political power from those who own it and those who have been assigned it and consolidating it into as few hands as possible.  Political parties allow a few to harness the power of many followers and apply pressure to the political process out of the sight and control of the very citizens whose power that party uses.  I fail to see that this is a good thing, especially in today’s interconnected world where everyone’s voice can carry equal weight.

Time and time again politicians will act and vote by the direction of their Party instead of their constituents. Simply put, under the present campaign finance system to be elected they HAVE to allow the party leaders to put a ring in their nose like a bull led to stud.  Parties and political donations are the rocks on which the ships of state have foundered all over the world, all through history.

Parties seem to be nothing more than a political expression of Tribalism.  A group of self interested people gather together a herd of citizens wishing for a leader and use them to not support, but subvert the political process in promotion of Me and Mine over Thee and Thine. The votes of Party politicians becomes not about following the collective will within a Constitutional framework but a zero-sum game of You-Win-I-Lose.

We see the result of this winner take all attitude in the willingness of too many politicians to give up their voters’ ideals when faced with a party issue.  This was demonstrated recently when 10 Republican Senators voted against an amendment to a bill (all the other Senators, including 30 Republicans voted Yes) that restricts the Federal government from contracting with a company that requires it’s employees to give up the right to sue or pursue criminal cases against other employees even in the case of rape and kidnapping. This amendment had been inspired by an actual case of the raping and kidnapping by Haliburton employees of another Haliburton contractee and the company’s subsequent refusal to allow civil or criminal proceedings (as per contract).

The 10 Senators felt that since the measure had been proposed by far-Left Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn. that it had to be a “ploy” (it was) and so might damage the party. It is sad that it DID damage the Parry a bit simply BECAUSE the 10 feel for it and voted by Party and not common sense. But the saddest part by far is that the 10 Senators, after being beaten up by the press, and the Party, feel that THEY are the injured party due to the Democratic “slurs” against them for voting the Party Line. The quote that seems most representative of their attitude comes from Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas:

“Trying to tap into the natural sympathy that we have for this victim of this rape —and use that as a justification to frankly misrepresent and embarrass his colleagues, I don’t think it’s a very constructive thing.”

In case you missed his point, the good Senator is upset that AFTER he and the other nine voted against the amendment Senator Franken used their pro-Party/pro-Haliburton vote to ridicule them for being of all things…party hacks!!! Senator Cornyn considers it to be dirty pool for Mr. Franken to have put him in the position of having to balance morals against The Party.  It is just not cricket, you know! That is how far the party system has taken us from reality! Unfortunately, this is hardly an isolated incident of partisanship.  Other examples abound from any and all parties be they past or present.

But, in this Digital Age for the first time, Humanity has the chance to apply constitutional democracy in a pure form. Let us abolish parties! They are nothing but a bad solution to the problems of pre-industrial communications. Let our politicians stand on their own platforms to campaign and by their voting record once elected, NOTHING ELSE! Let campaign donations of ALL SORTS be eliminated and instead, every candidate that qualifies for a given ballot receive the same “war chest”. Further, let no one be paid for their time working in a campaign other than contracted services such as catering, printing costs, air time or other non-creative, non-campaigning related services. In this new world direct campaign workers of all types would be solely volunteers!

Just imagine it Virginia! Politicians set apart from the influence of small groups of the self interested and forced to follow the consensus of all their constituents! Imagine politicians that have NO other forces influencing their votes than what their constituents feel should or should not be done within the limits of The Constitution. I don’t know about you Virginia, but that sends a shiver down MY leg! How about a change that actually gives us hope?
